According to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) website, the passing of Senate Bill 85 on July 1, 2020, introduced significant changes to the DUI and Ignition Interlock laws. Now, the KYTC delivers a fixed suspension period based on the DUI charge. After serving a specified portion of the suspension period, you can apply for an Ignition Interlock License.
If your license has been suspended, you may apply for an Ignition Interlock Device as a part of the Kentucky Ignition Interlock Program (KIIP). If you are approved, you can operate any approved vehicle(s) equipped with the device for the allowed timeframe. To view more information regarding DUI laws, visit the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet website.
If you decide to enroll in the KIIP, you are eligible for a reduction of your suspension period. An Ignition Interlock license will restrict you to operating only a motor vehicle or motorcycle equipped with a functioning Ignition Interlock Device. To qualify for the suspension reduction program, participants must be violation-free for 90 or 120 consecutive days, based on their offense.
