Uber Takes Credit For Fewer DUIs
Last week, in conjunction with Mothers Against Drunk Driving, Uber released a study that showed the number of drunk drivers has dwindled in cities that use Uber. This was especially true in the younger demographic. In a staggering show of what they have accomplished, Uber emailed California users to announce that drunk driving was down 60 percent since the introduction of UberX in California. There is no evidence of a direct correlation, but Uber believes they have prevented around 1,800 drunk drivers from getting behind the wheel. One reason younger people are using the app so frequently is likely because of the ease with which you can access your driver.
Uber’s report says they believe since the introduction of UberX, their cheapest option when it comes to fare prices, more people are using Uber to avoid driving after they have been drinking. While this is not necessarily a causation relationship, where Uber is the direct reason drunk driving has diminished, there is a correlation here that we are very happy to see, especially in the 30 and under age group. Drunk driving should not be your only option, especially when there are options like Uber that make it so easy to get ahold of a driver.
If you are going out with your friends and you will be having a few drinks, we encourage you to plan ahead and either designate a driver, or use a different form of transportation, like a taxi or an Uber. Trust us, it’s not worth all the things that could potentially go wrong.
