Reduce Unintentional Injuries with These Tips for National Safety Month

The National Safety Council (NSC) dubs June every year as National Safety Month. The organization’s focus is on “reducing leading causes of injury and death at work, on the road and in our homes and communities.”

Unintentional Injuries – Traffic Crashes

This year, the NSC showcased a certain theme per week that was focused on unintentional injuries. Unintentional injuries are surprisingly the 4^th leading cause of death in the U.S. These injuries can include traffic crashes, poisoning and falls, mostly in people ages 65 or older.

Last year, 40,000 people died in traffic-related crashes, with the three biggest causes being alcohol, speeding and distracted driving. For people ages 1 to 24, nearly 21 preventable traffic crash-related deaths occur every day in the U.S.

National Safety Council’s Tips

Some tips from the NSC to avoid increasing this number includes:

• Buckling up every trip
• Not using electronic devices while driving, such as phones
• Hailing a taxi, asking a sober friend/family member for a ride, or using an Uber/Lyft instead of drinking and driving
• Educating yourself on alcohol: impairment begins with the first drink
