When Will I Need an Ignition Interlock in Maryland?
Are you wondering if you need an Ignition Interlock in Maryland? Smart Start is here to help! According to the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA), as of October 1, 2024, you may be required to participate in the Ignition Interlock Program if you have received probation before judgment or have been convicted of a DUI or DWI. Initial refusal of a breathalyzer test while driving intoxicated may also result in an Interlock requirement1.
By participating in this program, you may be eligible to regain your driving privileges after a DUI or DWI. Here’s some general information about what you can expect if you are required to have an Ignition Interlock Device (IID) to get back on the road in Maryland.
Ignition Interlock Process in Maryland
To get started, you will need to install an IID on your vehicle. It’s important to choose a reliable Ignition Interlock provider so you can regain your driving privileges safely and effectively. That’s why Smart Start offers a small and discreet device with regularly scheduled calibrations at any of our service center locations. You can relax knowing our customer service team is available 24/7 to assist you with any questions you may have!
Call (800) 831-3299 and Smart Start’s friendly Program Advisors will help you schedule an installation appointment at a service center near you, often with same day availability. Once you’ve scheduled your appointment, remember to bring the below items with you to the service center.
Items to Take to Your Installation Appointment
- Two forms of ID. One needs to be a photo ID.
- Proof of residence. This can include but is not limited to a recent bill, a tax return, or another piece of formal correspondence by mail.
- Vehicle registration. You will need access to a legally registered and tagged vehicle.
- Proof of vehicle insurance. Maryland may require special auto-insurance for a DUI/DWI arrest or conviction, such as SR-22.
- Any documents you may have received regarding your case from the Maryland MVA. If you have questions about what this might include, our Program Advisors can help.
- Payment for installation and any applicable fees.
Your installation appointment will take a couple of hours. Some vehicles, like electric or hybrid vehicles, may require a longer appointment. A trained technician will install your device, demonstrate how to use it, and then provide hands on training so you’re comfortable using your Ignition Interlock system.
At the end of your appointment, you will receive written proof of installation. Bring this proof of installation and the temporary license you may have received from your arrest to a Maryland MVA location to request your restricted license1.
Keep in mind that depending on the facts of your case, you may face additional requirements such as paying fines or completing treatment to qualify for a restricted license2.
Interlock Restricted License in Maryland
After installing your Ignition Interlock and obtaining your Interlock Restricted License, you will receive a packet from the Maryland MVA in the mail. This packet will contain the guidelines of the program and relevant contact information. This packet will also include instructions regarding how to enroll in driver improvement classes if needed to reinstate your driving privileges.
