Idaho Close to Passing Stronger Ignition Interlock Law
Idaho is Close to Passing a Stronger Ignition Interlock Law
With the Governor of Idaho about to sign House Bill 551, the state is one step closer to requiring Ignition Interlocks for first-time DUI offenders and for those who refuse a roadside test. Once signed, the effective date would be January 2019. This would be the biggest DUI reform proposal to pass Idaho legislature since 1997.
The current Idaho law only requires Ignition Interlocks for repeat DUI offenders.
Idaho’s Updated Ignition Interlock Law
House Bill 551, once effective, will require DUI offenders who need an Ignition Interlock to install the device on any vehicle they operate for one year following the end of their license suspension period. The Ignition Interlock is a requirement for all first-time DUI offenders unless a judge finds mitigating circumstances to not order the device.
All-Offender Ignition Interlock States
Because of this upcoming change, Idaho could join the ranks of 30 other states, plus D.C., that enact all-offender Ignition Interlock laws.
States see the most effective, drastic change on their roadways when Ignition Interlocks are a requirement for first-time offenders with a BAC of .08 or above. Ignition Interlocks also reduce repeat offenses even after the device is removed by 39 percent compared to offenders who never installed an Ignition Interlock.
Smart Start applauds Idaho with this lifesaving measure to require Ignition Interlocks for all offenders.
