Can a breathalyzer detect drugs?
Here’s a question we get asked a lot. Can Ignition Interlock Devices, otherwise known as car breathalyzers, detect drugs such as marijuana?
It’s a fair thought. If Interlock Devices detect breath alcohol content, can they also detect drugs in someone’s system? The short answer is no, because of fuel-cell technology. That’s technical lingo for alcohol-specific testing properties in your device.
Developed in the 1960’s, the fuel cell has established a reputation over time to accurately provide a person’s breath alcohol sample. Basically, when you choose an Interlock Device with fuel cell technology, you are heavily lessening the possibility of false positive test results. Even with chewing tobacco or spicy foods, Interlocks with this technology have the utmost standards in accuracy of breath samples.
There is the possibility of a weed breathalyzer being developed by companies for roadside field testing by law enforcement. These devices would measure THC – tetrahydrocannabinol – in a person’s system.
Smart Start only offers devices that have alcohol-specific fuel cell technology. We also make sure our products are up to federal standards, are easy to use and have a discreet appearance, such as the SSI-20/30™.
Smart Start discourages the use of any type of drug while driving. It is illegal to drive while under the influence of drugs.
