Pennsylvania Ignition Interlock Laws

For repeat DUI offenders, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) may require you to install and maintain an Ignition Interlock Device (IID) in your vehicle if you…

  • Had a breath alcohol concentration (BAC) level of .08 or higher.
  • Refused a breath or chemical test.
  • Are guilty of subsequent DUI traffic offense during period of restricted license.

*You will be responsible for all costs and installation services for the IID, and bring your vehicle in for regular monitoring and service. You will be required to attend and complete an Alcohol Highway Safety School (AHSS) class and may be required to complete court ordered treatment.

How to Get Your License Quickly in Pennsylvania

  1. If you’re petitioning for the Ignition Interlock Limited License (IILL), you will need to:
    • Have the Ignition Interlock Device (IID) installed in your vehicle.
    • After IID is installed, complete the DL-9108 IILL Petition and any additional required forms listed on the checklist.
  2. If you have served your full suspension and still have an IID requirement, you will need to:
    • Have the Ignition Interlock installed in your vehicle.
    • Complete the Ignition Interlock License application which is found in your Restoration Requirements Letter (RRL)
    • Please review the RRL for any additional requirements.
  3. Call 800.831.3299 to schedule an appointment to have your Ignition Interlock Device installed at one our state-approved, Smart Start Interlock service providers.
