What happens after I get my DUI?
The State of Kentucky may issue restricted driving privileges to a driver who has been revoked due to an alcohol-related DUI. The driver must first apply with the convicting court and be ordered to participate. The driver will then submit an Ignition Interlock Application and a non-refundable application fee of $105 to the Kentucky Division of Driver License.
The Transportation Cabinet will then issue a letter describing your eligibility based upon what appears on your driver history record.
What do I need to bring to my installation?
Once you have scheduled your breath alcohol ignition interlock device (IID) installation with Smart Start, you will need to bring the following to your IID installation appointment:
- Two forms of identification, one of which needs to be a photo ID
- Proof of insurance
- Proof of residency
What should I bring back to my State authority after my device is installed?
You will need to bring the Certificate of Installation to the Circuit Clerk in your county of residence.
How do I know if Smart Start’s devices are compliant with my program?
Smart Start’s IID is compliant with all state and federal requirements, and we are certified as a IID provider by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. In addition, our breath alcohol ignition interlock devices are tested and certified to meet the standards set by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
What happens if I violate?
In the event of a violation resulting in an order by the court, your IID can be removed and the Transportation Cabinet can suspend your ignition interlock license.
How often does my IID need to be serviced?
You will be required to return to the installation center at least every 30-60 days for vehicle monitoring, so data can be downloaded from the device and reported to the DMV.
How do the consequences differ for a first and second DUI? Third? Fourth?
For a first DUI (within a 5- year period) with aggravating circumstances, you will need to have the ignition interlock for 6 months.
Second DUI (within a 5 year period) an ignition interlock is required for 12 months.
Third to fifth DUI (within a 5 – year period) an ignition interlock is required for 30 months.
What do I need for removal?
At the end of you suspension period you are authorized to remove the IID. Check with the DMV prior to removing the device to ensure you are authorized to remove.
What if I have a requirement, but I don’t own a vehicle?
If you do not own the vehicle you plan to install the Ignition Interlock device into, a written notarized statement from the vehicle’s owner will be required at the time of installation of the device.
Do I need the device on all of my vehicles?
You are only required to install a device on your primary vehicle; however you may choose to install devices on additional vehicles. The holder of an Ignition Interlock License is only authorized to drive a vehicle with an ignition interlock device installed.
Where can I go for service? Anywhere, or just within my state?
You can service your breath alcohol ignition interlock device (IID) at any Smart Start service center nationwide.
What constitutes a violation in my state?
- Failure to report for device monitoring every 30 days, or as scheduled;
- If convicting court receives notice from any law enforcement officer or Interlock service provider that indicates you operated a vehicle not equipped with an ignition Interlock device;
- Failure to abide by the service agreement with the Interlock service provider;
- If the participant or anyone else, aside from the Interlock service provider, is found tampering with, bypassing, or removing the Interlock device;
- Attempting to start, or operate, the vehicle while under the influence of alcohol;
- Failure to submit to and pass any retests prompted by the Interlock device after the vehicle has been started;
- Failure to use an ignition Interlock equipped vehicle;
- Concealing identification from the IID camera
- Failure to provide 50 breath samples in 30 days
- Accumulation of Interlock Demerit system points in accordance with DMV policy; or if you fail to enroll in, have no progress in, or withdraw yourself from the DUI Safety and Treatment Program.
What do I need to do to install voluntarily?

How do I know if I need a camera/GPS/etc.?
All IIDs in the state are required to have a camera.
Where does installation fall based on my condition?
You may install only after arraignment of the DUI with alcohol offense, and application made to the courts for authorization to apply for an ignition interlock license and device and approval by the courts for you to apply for an ignition interlock license with DMV.
Does the camera watch me all the time?
No, the camera only takes a picture when you are asked to provide a breath sample. The camera does not take videos, and there is no live streaming.
How do I know who my State authority is?
Your State authority will be the Prosecutor in the court in which the device was ordered.
How do I know what my state requires in an Ignition Interlock Device?

How can I pay for calibration?
When you go into the shop for service, you can pay with a credit card. However, some shops will allow you to pay in cash or with a pre-paid Visa card.
Where do I send a record of my service appointments?
Records will automatically be forwarded by Smart Start to the court which ordered the device.
Does this thing hurt my vehicle?
No, but the Smart Start IID works most effectively if you have a healthy, working battery.
Can I get one on my motorcycle?
Motorcycle Ignition Interlock installation laws differ by state.
