An Ignition Interlock Device (IID), also called a car breathalyzer, is typically installed in your vehicle as part of a legal requirement from law enforcement after drunk driving or other form of suspension. These Ignition Interlock Devices are small and discreet – about the size of a cell phone – and are located on the driver’s side of your vehicle.
Smart Start’s handheld car breathalyzer unit includes a cord that’s long enough to let you move the device freely. If it’s required by your state, you’ll also have a camera that verifies your identity during testing.
A car breathalyzer is a name that’s commonly used for an Ignition Interlock Device (IID). If you’ve had a DUI, it’s typically part of a legal requirement to install a breathalyzer in your car.
Some states – like Illinois and Michigan – also use the term Breath Alcohol Ignition Interlock Device (BAIID). Whether you call it an IID, BAIID or just a breathalyzer for your car, it’s a proven way to prevent drinking and driving.
Just blow into your Ignition Interlock Device to provide a breath test sample in order to start the vehicle. It measures your Breath Alcohol Concentration (BrAC).
The car breathalyzer tracks your vehicle activity anytime someone attempts to start the vehicle and while anyone is driving. The data provides a record of violations to your state/State Authority.

Using an Ignition Interlock is easy. Blow into the device for three or four seconds while humming at the same time, and you’ll hear a click that signals the test is complete.
Depending on state laws, our car breathalyzers support a “blow-and-hum” technique to confirm that it’s a real person taking the test. Blow-and-hum is more sanitary and less complicated than a blow-inhale-blow pattern used by car Interlock Devices from other companies. You can also help keep your device sanitary by cleaning or changing out the mouthpiece regularly.
