When Will I Need an Ignition Interlock in Alaska?
Do you know if you’ll need an Ignition Interlock in Alaska? Let’s go over when an Ignition Interlock may be a requirement and how long you’ll need the device.
Ignition Interlock Law in Alaska
Most DUI convictions and/or test refusals mean you must have an Ignition Interlock in Alaska. Whether it’s a first or subsequent DUI, you’ll want to prepare to install an Interlock Device as a requirement to reinstate your driving privileges. If you do need an Ignition Interlock, the DMV will place a “C” restriction on your driver’s license, which means an Ignition Interlock Device is required. Or on a limited driver’s license, “Ignition Interlock Device Required,” will be printed on the paper license.
How long you’ll need the Interlock Device is at the court’s discretion. In typical cases, the requirement period could range between six months to a year, but could also be longer. Keep in mind that you cannot wait out your Ignition Interlock requirement period!
How to Apply for an Ignition Interlock Device or IID Limited License
You may have the option to apply for an IID Limited License. This license is only available and can be issued after the first 30 days for a first misdemeanor DUI conviction or administrative per se offense. It is also available for second or subsequent misdemeanor DUI convictions or administrative per se offenses after the first 90 days. Limited licenses are not available if you refused your breath test.
To apply, you need to fill out the Limited License Application, or Form 404c. Alaska has an Alcohol Safety Action Program or ASAP that you may need to complete as well, along with any other requirements, to be eligible for an IID Limited License.
