How Do I Start the Process of Installing an Ignition Interlock in Kentucky?

There’s different paperwork involved before installing an Ignition Interlock in Kentucky.

1. First, following the court’s approval, you need to submit the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) Ignition Interlock Application (form TC 94-175) to the Transportation Cabinet. Along with the completed application, you also need to send:
   • A non-refundable application processing fee of $105
   • Your court order authorizing that you can apply
   • Proof of your insurance and valid vehicle registration
2. Once submitted, the KYTC will mail you a letter describing your eligibility based on what appears on your driving history record.
3. Now you may contact an Ignition Interlock vendor, such as Smart Start, to schedule your Ignition Interlock installation. Make sure you have these items with you for your installation appointment:
   • Your Ignition Interlock court order
   • The eligibility letter from KYTC
   • Photo ID
   • Car title/registration (if you are using someone else’s vehicle, you must bring a notarized statement from the vehicle owner expressing their consent for you to drive their vehicle with an Ignition Interlock installed)

How Long Will I Need an Ignition Interlock in Kentucky?

The time with your Ignition Interlock depends on your case and how many offenses you’ve had within a 10-year period. Usually, for first cases, you will need to have an Ignition Interlock for at least six months under aggravating circumstances. Second cases are 12 months, and third and fourth cases are 30 months.
