How does the KS Ignition Interlock process work?  Well there are many variables that change your situation, but for the most part it is pretty simple.  You just need to make sure to follow the correct steps.

1. Most offenses for DUI or Chemical Test Refusal are handled in much the same way, with the exception of those who would like to drive with a Certified Kansas Ignition Interlock device such as those provided through Smart Start of Kansas.  If you wish to modify to an interlock restriction at any point during the suspension period for an alcohol related offense you will need to apply to the state.  There is a form we can provide you and walk you through how to fill it out correctly, and how to avoid being denied costing you the $100 application fee.  We do this for no charge, just call us at (800) 831-3299 or you can request help through our website by clicking here!
2. For those who have complete the required suspension time, you should receive a letter in the mail from the Kansas DMV.  This will give you information on how long the Ignition Interlock requirement is for your particular situation.  You will need this letter as it becomes part of your license you will drive on throughout the term.
3. Next you will schedule an installation for the date your restriction time starts or after.  If at all possible don’t install before that date starts, as that will just wasting your money as you will not get credit for that time.  You can schedule your installation at any of our Statewide Interlock Installation locations.  You can schedule an appointment by calling our office at (800) 831-3299 or you can also schedule your appointment online by filling out a simple request form.  Just include the vehicle information, time and date you want to be installed and we will get you an appointment, get your paperwork filled out ahead of time and send it to the shop closest to you and give yo a call back.  You can find that quick install form by clicking here.  Then sit back, we will handle the rest.
4. The day you get your installation done a certified technician will install the unit while you complete a couple of pieces of paperwork.  We will then work with you in your vehicle to make sure you fully understand how the unit works and how to take the tests.  We want to be sure you are comfortable completely before leaving our location.  If you have questions you will be able to get them all answered before you leave.
5. We will then send your paperwork to the state to verify that you have been installed.  This is what triggers the DMV to start your restriction time.  You will have to serve the whole amount of time that is set out on the letter from the state.  Your time starts the day you are installed, not the date on the letter.  Be careful to not wait to long, as it will only delay the time when you can get it removed.  Kansas will not allow “sitting out” the Ignition Interlock requirement.  Even if you do not drive for the whole time period you will not be eligible until they receive proof you have completed the interlock requirement period.
