Independence Day DUI Arrests in Salinas
Police officers in Salinas are reporting that 27 drunk drivers were arrested for DUIs over the holiday weekend. There were also two fatal DUI crashes in the Monterey – San Benito County areas.
These arrests stem from local traffic stops that are routine law enforcement efforts for the “Avoid the 20” campaign. The arrests were made from Friday, July 3rd at 12:01 AM to Sunday, July 5th, at midnight. Officers from 20 law enforcement agencies were involved in the arrests over the holiday weekend.
The two fatal accidents that were reported show signs of being alcohol induced, but the officers cannot be sure until toxicology reports are back on the drivers. The officers also reported that these numbers preliminary, and some of the agencies have still not reported.
Another Avoid DUI campaign will happen in August and last 18 days before culminating on Labor Day. Additional patrols will happen during Big Week and California Rodeo Salinas July 15th through the 19th.
Avoid the 20 is a DUI task force that received a grant in 2014 to help prevent future DUIs and alcohol related crashes and injuries. It was named ‘Avoid the 20’ because there are 20 law enforcement agencies spread between two counties who are participating.
