Sobering Drunk Driving Statistics During Labor Day Weekend
We are all looking forward to the Labor Day weekend, which usually includes family, barbecue and one more day of some R&R. During the holidays, people are driving more often on the roads to travel. Unfortunately, this means an increase in drunk driving crashes.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), over 750 people died in drunk driving crashes from 2010 to 2014 during the Labor Day holiday.
In our nation, MADD says that the average drunk driver gets behind the wheel 80 times before their first arrest.
These are very terrifying statistics that need to be addressed. That is why the NHTSA has launched Drive Sober Or Get Pulled Over, a campaign advertising nationwide through Sept. 5. Because high-visibility enforcement reduces drunk driving fatalities as much as 20 percent, law enforcement is also doubling down on patrols this weekend to watch for impaired drivers.
We can help out, too. MADD reports that states with stronger ignition interlock laws are progressing with lower drunk driving crash rates, and lower recidivism in offenders.
At Smart Start, we want to make sure everyone has a fun and safe holiday. Please take extra precaution this weekend, pay attention to how much alcohol you are consuming and report any suspicious driving on our roadways. Consider using Uber or Lyft, car service apps, if you are feeling like you or your ride drank too much.
If you would like more information on Smart Start’s ignition interlock devices, commonly known as car breathalyzers, our customer service center is open 24/7 at 844-783-0979.
