What is the Difference Between a DUI and DWI?
So, what is the difference between a DUI and DWI?
Throughout the U.S., impaired driving acronyms vary state-by-state. A few examples of these terms are DUI, DWI, OWI and OVI.
Is there a difference between a DUI and DWI, or do they have the same meaning?
All of them generally mean operating a vehicle while under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol. These types of offenses could also include impaired driving through prescription drugs.
It can get a little confusing since some states will use more than one term. In these cases, but not limited to them, the acronyms do mean different offenses. For example, DWI could refer to drunk driving with a BAC level over the legal limit. .08 is the legal limit nationwide.
The state would use DUI for cases where a driver is under the influence of alcohol and drugs, but states could also use DUI and DWI interchangeably.
Some states have enacted their own acronyms. For example, Ohio established a law that refers to impaired driving under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol as OMVI.
Here’s just a few of the different terms every state uses:
DUI – Driving Under the Influence
DWI – Driving While Intoxicated
OWI – Operating While Intoxicated
OVI – Operating a Vehicle Impaired
OVUII – Operating a Vehicle Under the Influence of an Intoxicant (Hawaii is the only state that uses this acronym)
OMVI – Operating a Motor Vehicle Impaired
If you have an offense in your state, there are some consequences involved. If you have the option to use an Interlock Device, this means you will be able to drive again with a restricted license. Interlock Devices do not affect your everyday routine, and breath tests only take seconds to perform.
Each state varies regarding how long you will need to have an Interlock Device in your vehicle.
