Common Error Messages and Their Meaning
These common error messages are what we call an abort-type message from your Ignition Interlock. Abort test results mean your device did not get a sufficient reading from your breath. Keep in mind that aborts will not mean failed tests!
- BLOW HARDER: Your breath sample wasn’t long enough for your test to register or you may need to blow stronger. If you have trouble providing a breath sample, talk to your Smart Start technician for help.
- BLOW LONGER: Your breath pressure was not sufficient or you did not blow long enough into the mouthpiece.
- BLOW SOFTER: Your IID is receiving too much air pressure.
- DON’T INHALE: You may have inhaled while your mouth was on the mouthpiece right before the test.
- MOUTH CLOSER: Your lips are not completely sealed around the mouthpiece or your lips are not close enough to the base of the mouthpiece.
- ABORT TAMPER: There may be something blocking the flow of air through the device, your hand is blocking the vent on the back of the Interlock, or the IID is detecting something blowing into the device that is not a person’s breath.
- RECALL 3: There may be an issue with your device cord or your vehicle battery.
Warn, Fail, or Violation Messages
If you receive a warn, fail, or violation message on your IID that means the device detected alcohol in your breath sample. If you think this reading was caused by food, make sure to rinse your mouth out with water and try again.
